Robin Fielding — Director

After graduating in Mathematics from Oxford University, Robin joined BDO - one of the world’s largest accountancy and business advisory practices.  He trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant within the Corporate Finance team - at the time, the first and only person to do so.

He spent over 11 years in the Transaction Services department, latterly as a Director, primarily carrying out financial due diligence for corporates, banks and private equity houses on their investments and acquisitions.  Working in a number of locations around the world, he worked on a wide range of transactions including:

  • Private equity MBO / MBI investments
  • Corporate acquisitions
  • Bank pre-lending reviews
  • Full List and AIM flotations and fundraisings

Since leaving BDO, Robin has worked as an independent advisor to various corporates and finance providers, and has also had a longer-term role working alongside a corporate accounting team; he therefore has experience on “both sides of the table”.

He has worked on a number of transaction- and project-based roles including:

  • Evaluating, modelling and negotiating a business interruption insurance claim, where he was critical in achieving a significant (8-figure) settlement with loss adjusters and forensic accountants
  • Various corporate acquisition transactions, both in the UK and US, including due diligence and negotiation of contract terms and completion accounts
  • Advising on sell-side strategy and negotiation in connection with a shareholder / private equity exit, writing the business plan and managing the VDD process, running online datarooms, and provision of information to buyers and their advisers
  • Carrying out well-received investment due diligence for an award-winning VCT fund
  • Post-merger integration planning and implementation, including financial reporting / opening balance sheets, and set-up and introduction of new financial systems
  • Hands-on support and guidance to a finance team in industry, including management reporting, systems and process improvement, audit preparation, and company secretarial administration
  • Advising a start-up business seeking seed finance, which incorporated providing both financial and strategic advice, financial modelling and business planning

Robin specialises in working with Board-level management teams, but can roll up his sleeves to work on day-to-day finance and operational tasks with relevant teams where necessary.  He clearly communicates issues and trends, identifying key business and transaction risks.  He backs this up with focused reports, presentations and analysis.  He always seeks to favourably influence negotiations, aid decision-making, and drive value from projects and transactions.

Robin has also been actively involved in marketing, organization of networking and social events, staff appraisal and mentoring, team management, and development of IT solutions, as well as running his own business with the various legal, professional and other obligations thereof.
